Food Allergens on Labels: What Actually Matters on Packaging

Food Allergens on Labels: What Actually Matters on Packaging

Food allergy management is mostly boring diligence: same checklist at every café, every packaged snack, every “just try a bite”. Labels help — when you know where allergen language hides.

The usual “big” allergens

Rules vary by country, but labels commonly call out milk, eggs, fish, crustaceans, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat/gluten cereals, soy, sesame, and sometimes more (celery, mustard, lupin, molluscs, sulphites above a threshold in the EU/UK).

Where people get caught out

  • Sauces and seasonings — soy, wheat, fish sauce in “Asian-style” dressings
  • Shared lines — “may contain nuts” is not theatre for lawyers only
  • Vague terms — “natural flavour”, “spice blend” can bury issues; look for bold allergen names in the full list
  • Baking & chocolate — nuts and dairy are frequent roommates

Allergy vs intolerance

Allergy can be immune and severe; intolerance (lactose, etc.) is often dose-dependent discomfort. Labels don’t always distinguish those everyday experiences — your clinician’s advice trumps blog posts, including this one.

Tech that doesn’t replace an EpiPen

No app replaces emergency care. What apps do well is scanning dense lists fast when you’re stressed and hungry. Set allergens in your Vital Scan profile and the scan result highlights matches so you’re not doing a second pass with tired eyes at 21:40 in a convenience store.
